Is the Grosh premium subscription tied to a Grosh account?

January 24, 2021

No, actually not. It is tied to your icloud or google account. When you buy a subscription in the app, you buy it from Apple and Google, and that particular icloud / google account has access to the premium subscription. This means that you can restore an in-app purchase on any device logged in with the same icloud/google account, no matter which Grosh account the app uses. Sounds a bit strange, but that is how in-app purchase technology works.

Why can I not add a grocery name?

January 24, 2021

The system tries to keep the list of groceries tidy in order not to create duplicates in the grocery vocabulary.

For instance, “chocolate dark” and “dark chocolate” is the same thing, so it only allows (known) adjectives at the end.

Also it does not know an adjective to be stored by itself, e.g. “dark”.

Grosh also tries to separate brand names from the entered item name, e.g. “arla milk” will add “milk” with the brand “arla” tag.

The system analyses everything entered and tries to detect duplicates, bad grocery names etc. If you think you’ve come across something that is handled wrong by the system, please send a mail to support at groshapp dot com.

Grosh suggestions in the app depends on clean data = not using different names for essentially the same grocery.

Another example: Adding “arla skimmed milk” for English will show “milk skimmed (Arla)” on the list as the brand was removed from the grocery name, and the adjective skimmed was moved to the end to ensure consistency with the naming conventions (again to avoid duplicates).

With clean data, Grosh is able to do consumption tracking and thus making intelligent shopping suggestions, which is a prime feature of the app, see How does Grosh know what I need?

See also Why does the system change item names.

We’ve not figured out a better way to avoid duplicates so far, but we’re open to suggestions.

PS Note this does not apply to list types we dont need to do consumption tracking on eg wish lists.

Why can i not add brand?

January 24, 2021

It could be because you’ve entered a brand name that’s identical to an adverb or grocery name. The system tries to keep the list of brands tidy, and if it observes what seems to be an obvious error in the use of the app (someone entered grocery name and brand in the wrong fields) it will let you know. If you think you’ve come across something that is handled wrong by the system, please send a mail to support at groshapp dot com.

How do I add my own categories?

November 26, 2020

For stock lists you can have list specific own categories, e.g. for different parts of the freezer:

  • Choose Menu-Select list
  • Tap pen icon the to right hand side of the stock list
  • This will show list properties.
  • Now select Own categories (instead of no categories) and then you can setup your own categories for the list.

PS You should not create them under settings, that’s for grocery categories that go across all lists.

Why does my list not sync?

October 26, 2020

If modifications exist, they are batched together and sent to the server as a whole. This significantly reduces network traffic and speeds up the app. The change also makes it possible to use the app when you are completely without network coverage, e.g. in an underground grocery store.

To sync the list, you just use pull-to-refresh (place finger on the list, move it down a bit, and release your finger). If you don’t do so, the app will sync by itself the next time it is launched or by itself within some seconds (if modifications exist). The same applies if you’re out shopping and marking stuff as purchased – again you should use the pull-to-refresh or wait for the auto-sync as this will not only save what you’re marked as bought, but also check if your spouse added anything to the list.

Note: If you pull-to-refresh while the Grosh servers are unavailable, you will see a message about being offline, and that you can continue to use the app.

Also note that you can switch autosync off under Settings-Functions.
