Can I specify further details about a grocery item?

November 4, 2015

Yes, on the details page for an item there is a note field. Here you can write extra information about the item. As a supplement to the note field, there is also a price and store fields, if you want to specify where and at what price an item should be bought. If you tap the grocery name field, a few extra fields are revealed for entering a specific brand such as Kellogg’s or unit size such as 2kg.

Do I need to specify the category for every item on the list?

November 4, 2015

No, Grosh will normally do this automatically. It is always good to ensure the category is correctly set when adding new types of groceries, and correct Grosh if the app makes a mistake. Correct categorisation will give you a correct grouping of items on the shopping list. This helps you clear all dairy products whilst you are in that area of the shop, then move on to the next area to get the grocery items related to that category. This will make you a more effective grocery shopper!

Note: Categorisation of items is personal and therefore nothing to do with the selected list. This means that if you have several lists and add the same item to them, the category you picked on one list will be reused on the other.
This can certainly have benefits if you have several lists, but there’s downside: A side effect of this is that your spouse may see a different categorisation than you for the same list – as your spouse will have his or her own categorisation defined.

Do I need to specify the store on the grocery list?

November 4, 2015

You only need to set the store name for an item, if that is of help the person doing the shopping – the field is completely optional and can be skipped. However, if you set it, you can easily filter the list only to show items to be purchased at a particular store by just clicking the store name label on the shopping list. Click it again to un-filter the list.

After you’ve bought items during a shopping trip, the trip itself will be marked with the store associated with the location reported by your phone. Normally, the store marking of a shopping trip is automatic, but you may need to specify a location to be a store the first couple of times you shop there.

Note that the trip store marking is totally independent of the store marking on individual items.

Do I need to specify quantity on the grocery list?

November 4, 2015

If, for example, you always buy 5 milk you don’t need to write quantity on the shopping list. But it will make the suggestions from the system more accurate. Also, Grosh will remember the last quantity you added, so just type milk to add 5 milk the next time to the list.

How does Grosh categorise my grocery items?

November 4, 2015

Grosh ships with a bunch of groceries in what we call the standard dictionary. When adding groceries from the standard dictionary to your shopping list, they automatically appear in the right category on your list. When adding new items to your grocery list, Grosh will try to categorise them based on how other users have categorised similar items. If you are not happy with the categorisation, you can just tap the grocery and change the categorisation. When you choose a category, you help yourself and other users by making the system smarter!
